Position Paper Tips

 Hi delegates!

Just wanted to check in and offer a bit more guidance on your position papers.

As a reminder, MYANMAR will be using standard crisis position paper format detailed on the BMUN Website

Besides the general format, we wanted to offer some tips on the research process and the formation of your paper.

Research:

  1. Getting a grasp of the Topic:

  • Committee Synopsis: Start by thoroughly reading the MYANMAR Synopsis. This document outlines the topic, its key aspects, relevant historical context, and questions that lead to potential solutions.

  • The synopsis is a great place to start when looking for research on the topic and your character.

  1. Outside research

  • It’s important not just to reiterate the synopsis; it is only the beginning of fully understanding the topic. Think of the synopsis as a stepping stone towards the research necessary to achieve a quality position paper.

  • Additional Research: Conduct further research outside the synopsis on the ongoing crisis, your character, and other aspects of the committee using credible sources like UN documents, Resolutions, declarations, and reports from relevant UN bodies like the General Assembly and Security Council. News articles: From reputable news sources offering diverse perspectives on the issue. Academic journals and articles: Providing in-depth analysis and data on the topic. Government websites and reports: Offering official stances and policies of different countries. NGO reports and publications: Presenting perspectives from civil society organizations. These sources help in fleshing out your knowledge of the subject, leading to an even greater position paper.

  • For more guidance on the research process for your delegation, refer to this page on the BMUN website.

Writing:

  1. Developing a plan:

  • While you may be eager to start writing after extensive research, what makes a position paper quality is not how fast it's finished but how coherent it is. That's why planning with an outline of what you will say is vital for success when writing your paper. You want to ensure that your paper isn't regurgitating information but is developing quality commentary on the information you've researched, and an outline will help achieve that.

  1. Time management

  • Make sure to give yourself enough time not only to write the paper but also to outline and revise it. Quality takes time, so give yourself ample time to work.

  1. Additional Information

  • Reminder that Position Papers are due on February 18th to be considered for the Research Award, and February 25th to be considered for any committee award.

  • Feel free to reach out to us at myanmarbmun72@bmun.org for any questions or concerns throughout your research and writing process and interact with the blog if you’d like!

  • We are so excited to see what you bring to committee, and are here to help you throughout this process!

Best,
